How Sutton ADU Fresno Was Born in Fresno

Bringing Sutton ADU Builders to Fresno wasn’t a business decision we made on a spreadsheet. It came from watching this city change, block by block, and seeing how many homeowners were quietly stuck. Fresno has always had room, that’s the thing. Big lots in the Tower District, wide parcels in Sunnyside, older postwar neighborhoods where the backyard could hold two more houses if someone had the sense to build them. But for years, the people who wanted to build a second unit on their lot had nowhere to turn that felt honest. They’d call a general contractor who’d never done an ADU, get a price that wandered upward from the first meeting, and end up with a half-finished shell where their mother-in-law was supposed to live.

We’re part of the Threshold Group family, so the standard already existed before we ever opened our doors here. What Fresno needed was a local team that would work to that standard: written prices before any work starts, technicians you can vet before they ever step onto your property, and a guarantee that actually means something. That’s what we built. Our branch is led by Miles Hartwell, and from the beginning, the whole point was to make Fresno homeowners feel like they weren’t guessing when they hired someone to add a home to their own lot.

Miles Hartwell’s Personal Connection to the ADU Trade

Miles Hartwell didn’t fall into ADU work by accident. He fell into it by looking at what other people were doing wrong and realizing he couldn’t stop noticing. Early in his career in construction, he spent a lot of time walking through other people’s job sites, the kind where the framing was up but the windows weren’t flashed right, where the electrical rough-in looked fine until you actually traced the circuit. He learned to spot the corners people cut when they thought no one was looking. And the more he saw, the more it bothered him; not because he was picky, but because he kept imagining the family that would move in and find out later.

The ADU trade specifically got into his blood because it’s small enough to care about. A whole house is a project you manage. An ADU is a room you build for someone you know: an aging parent tuning the same Spanish-language radio station they’ve listened to for three decades, a grown kid who came home to save for a wedding, a renter who just needs a quiet place with a door that locks and a kitchen that works. Miles has spent more than a decade in the trades, and what keeps him coming back is the moment a homeowner walks through a finished unit and says, “This feels like a real home.” He’d still be building something even if he weren’t building ADUs; probably furniture, probably too much of it, with more clamps than any reasonable person needs. The smell of sawdust and the sight of a straight line where two walls meet; that’s what home feels like to him. His job is just to make enough of that feeling for the people of Fresno to live in it.

Meet Miles Hartwell – The Person Behind Every Job

Miles Hartwell is the Owner & Founder of Sutton ADU Fresno. He has spent more than a decade in construction and the building trades, with hands-on experience across framing, site work, and the particular demands of accessory dwelling units. What makes him different from a corporate franchise technician is simple: he lives here, he works here, and he treats every job in Fresno like it’s going to be inspected by someone he’ll see at the grocery store. Because it probably will be.

Outside of work, Miles is a reader of history and a fairly serious weekend cook, the kind who insists that the first pancake is never the best one. His personal commitment to every customer is this: if it’s not done right, it’s not done, and he’ll be the one making it right.

Our Promise to Fresno Homeowners

Every ADU we quote in Fresno gets a written price before any work starts. That’s not a courtesy; it’s the Threshold Standard, and we hold to it because we’ve seen what happens when people don’t. A written price means you know the number going in, and you can hold us to it.

We use quality materials and components, and we stand behind every job with the Threshold Verified guarantee. If a technician arrives at your door who you weren’t told to expect, by name and by photo, that visit is on us and we make it right. Those aren’t slogans. They’re the way we’ve run this branch since Miles built the local team, and they’re the reason people in Fresno, Clovis, and Madera keep our number saved in their phones.

Our Credentials

When you hire someone to add a home to your lot, you want to know exactly who is walking up your driveway. Here is what every Sutton ADU Fresno technician works under:

  • Licensing: Every pro working under our name is required to hold the license and insurance their state requires. We don’t operate outside those requirements, and we don’t ask our customers to look the other way.
  • Insurance & Bonding: Every pro working under our name is required to carry the insurance and bonding their state requires. If a homeowner asks to see proof, we show it.
  • Experience: Miles Hartwell leads a local team with more than a decade of accumulated building-trade experience. The skill wasn’t imported from somewhere else; it was earned on job sites, and it’s inspected on every project we finish.
  • Reputation: We’ve built a strong local reputation in the Fresno area, earned project by project, by keeping the Threshold Standard: background-checked and identity-verified technicians, name and photo sent before every visit, ID badge at the door, clean marked uniform, and a written price before work begins.

Those credentials matter because this is your home, not just a job site. When the person at your door has been background-checked, identity-verified, and sent to you by name and photo before they arrive, the question isn’t “Who is this?” It’s “Oh good, you’re here.”

Rooted in Fresno

Sutton is an old English village name meaning the south farm, and there’s something right about that for us here in the Central Valley. Fresno grows things: almonds, grapes, families, and now more homes on the same lot where they already live. We serve the whole city and the surrounding communities, including Madera, Reedley, Fowler, Visalia, Firebaugh, Tulare, Clovis, Sanger, Selma, Kerman, and Kingsburg. This is where our kids go to school, where we buy our produce at the Vineyard Farmers Market, and where we drive the 41 north on a Friday afternoon like everyone else. We don’t pretend to be from every town. Sutton ADU Fresno is one independent local business that agreed to work to the Threshold Standard, and we’re proud of what that means on our own streets.
